A man who’d just left a Baytown store on his bike was shot dead by a gunman one witness says was waiting nearby in a truck.
Baytown police are investigating the homicide on South Pruett Street, and while they have not said much, that eyewitness account of what they say went down is troubling.
Here’s what we know from police:
The Baytown Police Department confirmed the shooting happened on South Pruett near West Main Steet. They say two men who knew each other got into an argument, and at some point during that argument, one of them shot the other. Police also say they have a man in custody and they have not released the victim’s name because they’re still working to get in touch with his family members.
Here’s what the witness tells Grizzy’s Hood News, our community partner.
The witness says the victim had just walked out of a nearby store, said his goodbyes, hopped on a bicycle and started pedaling away. The witness says they were pulling out of the area themselves when the first shot rang out.
But even before that, the witness says the gunman had been sitting inside a white truck the whole time, watching the victim while he was still in the store. Before the shooting started, the witness says the gunman put on earmuffs.
Then as the victim rode off on his bike, the gunman got out through the rear door of the truck and opened fire, shooting the bicyclist from behind. The victim was knocked off his bike, but got back up and tried to run toward Cleveland Street.
The shooting didn’t stop, according to the witness. They said the gunman then stepped out into the road, spread their legs into what they compared to a military-style shooting stance, and kept firing.
After the shooting stopped, the witness says the gunman took off his earmuffs, sat down near the truck, put a rag or cloth up to his head and acted as if nothing had happened. The witnesses also said the victim’s bicycle was moved closer to the gunman’s truck before police got there.
Police said they’ll release more information as they investigate.
